The Lake District

The Lake District is a mountain- and lake countryside in the county in north-west of England. It consists of lakes, mountain brooks, waterfalls, meagre downs and rocky mountains. The biggest lakes are Windermere, Dervent Water, Coniston Water, Ullswater, Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water and Bassenthwaite Lake. Some of them are man made. In the area of this park is Scafell Pike, the biggest mountain in England (978 metres).

The Cumbrian Mountains in the north consist of an about 500 million year old mountain chain of slate from the Ordovizium. In the central part it consists of younger, volcanic stone and in the south the mountain chain consists of limestone and other kinds of stone from the Silur about 440 million years old. These highlands are divided by the U-valleys, called Dales, where the lakes are, too. The most peculiar animals in the Lake District are Wandersaibling, a Renken-sort and other several specimen of the rare stone eagles.

Short History

The park came into being in 1951. The lakes are remains of the glaciers of the last ice-age. The Lake District was made famous by English poets ( William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey). They lived there at the beginning of the 19th century. They are also called Lake Poets. In 1906 a part of the Ullswater Lake was built. The Lake District Nationalpark covers 2243 km² now . The National Trust, founded in 1895, non-profit club for the preservation of British countrysides and cultures, is the biggest landowner in the Lake District.

The special things of the Lake District:

The lakes, tarns and rivers

The quantity and selection of open water, ranging in scale from small upland tarns to the larger lakes, and the many rivers, help a great deal to the identity, wildlife and public enjoyment of the Lake District. Enhanced by pastoral, wooded and mountainous settings they give the Lake District a quality of countryside not found elsewhere in the country.
