Half Broke Horses: Mothers and Daughters

Eine Unterrichtseinheit zum problematischen Verhältnis von Lily und ihrer Tochter Rosemary

 Einstieg:

1. In your opinion, what should parents give their children in order to prepare them for life?
2. When parents and their children clash, what does it tend to be about? Try to find suitable categories. (Please make notes and keep them for the end of the lesson!)

Step 1:

• Erarbeitung anhand des Songs "Mothers and Daughters" von Vaya Con Dios (Album "Time Flies", 1992)
• Ein Transkript des Songtextes findet sich hier.
• Arbeitsauftrag: Analyse what the daughter in the song accuses her mother of! Give references.

• Diskussion: Are these accusations exaggerated? Or are they typical of mother-daughter conflicts? Reasons?
• Überleitung zu einer anderen problematischen Mutter-Tochter-Beziehung: Lily und ihre Tochter Rosemary

Step 2:

• Exemplarische Analyse von Textstellen aus HBH in vier Schritten: Was geschieht? Worum dreht sich der Mutter-Tochter-Konflikt hier? Was beabsichtigt Lily? Wie wirkt sich das auf Rosemary aus?
• arbeitsteiliges Vorgehen in 5 Gruppen, stichwortartiges Ausfüllen des Sicherungsblattes (in Word, OpenOffice und PDF)
• gegenseitiger Austausch (z.B. one to stay, three to stray).

  • How can we characterize Lily’s style of bringing up her daughter?
  • How would you describe their relationship?

Diskussion im Plenum, evtl. Schreibaufgabe

• Are there any similarities and/or differences between the song and Lily vs. Rosemary?
• If Rosemary wrote a similar song about the relationship with her mother, what would she mention? (no rhymes / meter required)
• (Rekurs auf Einstieg) Judging from your experience, are those mother-daughter conflicts typical? Would you rate Lily and the mother in the song as “good parents”? Refer to your list from the beginning of the lesson.
