Equipment
Sampling in the brook
The students work in groups of one student per school. For each group the following equipment is needed:
- One strainer with handle
- One shallow robust white plastic container for sorting the animals
- One hand-held magnifying glass or magnifier box
- One or more flexible forceps or tweezers
- One small vegetable brush
- One or more pairs of Wellington boots or other tall waterproof boots and rubber gloves
- One glass jar with a waterproof screw cap
- One small paintbrush
For all the groups together the following equipment is needed:
- Three plastic buckets, preferably with lids
- One yardstick
- A few towels
All the equipment must not be contaminated with poisonous liquids or similar, because they get into contact with living animals.
Identifying the animals at school
The groups of students remain the same. For each group the following equipment is needed:
- One stereo microscope
- Three or more small bowls
- More than one flexible forceps or tweezers
- One field guide to the macroinvertebrates with coloured figures
For all the groups together the following equipment is needed:
- The plastic buckets and the glass jars with the screw caps with the macroinvertebrates of the brook
- One shallow robust white plastic container for sorting the animals
